The Green Agenda

green agenda

The green issue has been a mainstream topic for the last decade with individuals and businesses gradually becoming more geo aware. We understand we need to go 'green' but the path there can be a treacherous one. With thorny issues such as embodied energy versus operating energy it can be hard to get to the facts.

70% of our total energy consumption is influenced by the way our cities and infrastructure are designed with 44% of this from the buildings we live in. Vast amounts of energy are put into the construction of our homes and this is where the real savings are made. However, here are some simple points to consider about your home:

Insulation - Heat rises and in an uninsulated home a quarter of your heat is lost through the roof. Packing the joists and rafters in the loft will save significant amounts on your heating consumption and should pay for itself with 2-4 years*. Rockwall is a natural, and sustainable product with excellent acoustic insulation or an even greener and natural alternative straight from Welsh sheep is Black Mountain Insulation.

Lighting - Incandescent (traditional) light bulbs have now been phased out, so energy bulbs are fast becoming the only choice. LED bulbs are by far the best option when it comes to efficiency. LEDs produce light through the movement of electrons rather than passing an electric current through a thin metal wire and as such use 90% less energy than incandescent bulbs. Their life expectancy is also vastly greater at 25-30 years. Previously LEDs produced a focused cool blueish light but advances in technology means they can now match halogen bulbs at 2700k and with a beam angle of 40 degrees. The downside is that they are expensive starting at £10 each. Check out Ledbulbs.co.uk

Paint - VOC (Volatile Organic Compounds) are emitted from most high street paints. Choosing a paint that has a low or zero VOC content is better for the environment and your health.

Draft proofing - This is often the most overlooked yet cheapest and most efficient way to save energy. Windows, doors and chimney flues should be looked at first. Effectively draft proofing your house could save £60 off your annual heating bill*.

Reclaimed materials - When it comes to furnishing your home using reclaimed/recycled materials saves embodied energy in the manufacturing process. Freecycle and London based Retrouvius are excellent places to start.

Heating - Replacing an old boiler with an A-rated high-efficiency condensing boiler will cut your carbon emissions and make significant savings to your heating bill. Single panel radiators should be upgraded to double panel double convector models to maximise heat output.
